People say God speaks to people in dreams and visions. Sometimes, when I dream things that don’t make sense, I call those “cheese dreams.” Remember Scrooge says to Jacob Marley’s ghost: “How do I know you’re not just a figment in my imagination? Emerged from a bit of cheese?” He reasons with the vision.
Scrooge is suggesting that the vision standing before him is not an interdimensional being visiting from another world. Rather, it’s the result of indigestion. People will say anything to avoid hearing what they do not want to hear. Sometimes it’s called “Science.”
We can be pretty sure this dream is not a cheese dream because Marley, the ghost, is telling Scrooge things he does NOT want to hear. That he’s a wretch, doomed to misery if he doesn’t amend his ways. (See Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens )
If the vision WAS of Scrooge’s imagination only- Marley would be lying to him, saying everything’s great! Nothing to see here! That’s what we tell ourselves when things are wrong, very wrong. And we feel powerless to change it.
Anyhow, God does speak to people in dreams and visions, I am pretty sure. There are such things as cheese dreams. Eat a piece pizza before bed and see what happens. The question is, how do we know the difference between inspired dreams and cheese-only dreams?
